This trip was in my mind quite long. I am the type of person who needs to try new things and rafting is definitely one of them. I had good plan for action on whole week in Slovenia including rafting, canoying, bike, paraglide (you can find this and another pack on this site or this), but I had little problem with people. Some had other plans, lack of free days at work or they simply had scare. In summer is little difficult to find date which suits for all.
But happiness smiled at me in the right time. Although we haven’t taken the time for a whole week, we went at least for a longer weekend. So on thursday we started our little trip. Trip from Bratislava to Bovec (centre of the rafting universe) takes something about 6 hours. Here is very good tip. Take a A23 highway to Tarvisio (Italy) and then get to Bovec. Our navigation took us through Kranjska Gora to Vršič Pass. Don’t get me wrong. It’s beautiful road up there if you love hairpin turns but your transmission will hate you for that. If you have time and you don’t like your car take this road. You will have cool remembering for rest of your car life. So at 11:30 pm we finally arrived and went sleeping (also drinking :D). Price for accommodation in Bovec is ok and nights in apartman starts at 18 Euro per person (for more apartman prices ask locals). Camp is cheaper and it’s about 10 Euro per person.
Day 1 – Canyoning
Ninety percent of people who do canynoning in Bovec do canynonig on “Susec” (others places are FRATARICA CANYON and PREDELICA). Susec is funny canyon with many jumps and slides. Another tip from me is that before trip ask about water level in local rafting company. This summer was quite hot and we have been there on the end of season (season is from june to september). If Susec has little water some atractions aren’t available.
Day 2 – Rafting
Same warning as in Canyoning. Ask for water level on river Soca. For low level we had to start 5 km closer to rafting destination. I must say that rafting is pretty amazing if you have in boat skilled steersman. If you listened instructions carefully, there nothing you can be afraid of. On the way to destination every boat crew has some stops for little games in water or jumping from 26 feet rocks. I must say that water is very clean and you can drink right from river. Remember one thing. Rafting on Soca is cool but it is still wild river.
Day 3 – Hiking
Last day of roadtrip we went hiking on Mangart (2679 m). You can reach 2200 m. with car. Rest of path to peak takes 2 hour. Another little advice is that you shouldn’t underestimate your shoes. Be prepared for sliding rocks there. If something happen and you can’t go down, call 118. It’s mountain rescue helicopter from Italy. If you wanna take a flight with them be sure to be insured. It could be very expensive tripa after that.
Tips to Rafting in Bovec Slovenia
1. Don’t go to Bovec through Kranjska Gora but take a highway to Tarvisio. Your car will love you for this
2. If you have GoPro on rafting, tie it to your arm.
3. Some good accommodation in Bovec is here and here
4. Before trip find out the state level of water
5. Hiking on Mangart is “easy”. But don’t underestimate shoes and be insured.
